Description
1976 National Bicentennial Medal
MS65 Deep Prooflike
Large Diameter, Swoger-52IAa, Number 233
1976 National Bicentennial Gold Medal, Large Diameter,
Swoger-52IAa, MS65 Deep Prooflike NGC. 76 mm. 463.73 grams of
.900 fine gold, equivalent to 13.41 ounces of pure gold. Serial
edge number 233. Designed by Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro. For
more than 40 years, beginning in 1933, gold bullion was illegal to
own for the general public in the United States. The gold recall
era ended on the final day of 1974, when President Ford issued an
executive order revoking Franklin Roosevelt's decree. Ford's
decision allowed 1976 National Bicentennial medals to be issued in
gold in three different diameters. The rarest, largest, and most
impressive variety is Swoger-52IAa. It has a mintage of just 424
pieces, some of which were presumably melted during the various
run-ups in the price of gold over the past half-century. The
pedigree of each piece can be tracked due to a sequential serial
number on the edge, which is visible on this piece via a notch in
the NGC holder. The present yellow-gold Gem is fully struck and exhibits unblemished surfaces with gleaming mirror-like reflectivity that is some of the deepest we have seen on these medals. NGC has certified only six examples as Deep Prooflike in all grades (11/25). This is only the second Gem Deep Prooflike example we have handled, and we have never seen a finer piece with this degree of field mirroring. The previous MS65 Deep Prooflike piece appeared in our May 2025 Central States Signature auction where it realized $54,000. Also recently, an MS65 Prooflike piece in our 2025 FUN Signature auction realized $60,000.
