Description

1873 Open 3 Nickel Three Cent, MS65+
Seldom Found This Well-Preserved

1873 3CN Open 3 MS65+ PCGS. CAC. Well-preserved, satiny surfaces yield warm golden-gray toning on each side of this Gem Open 3 example. Several wreath leaves are slightly soft around the outer edges, but the remainder of the relief elements are well-defined. The Open 3 nickel three cent piece had about twice the mintage as did its Closed 3 counterpart (783,000 pieces versus 390,000 pieces), but it is remarkably similar in Mint State rarity. In Gem and finer grades, the Open 3 variant is actually slightly scarcer than the Closed 3, and it is conditionally rare at this level of preservation.
