Description

1879 Trade Dollar, PR68 Cameo
Beautiful Condition Census Example

1879 T$1 PR68★ Cameo NGC. The 1879 proof Trade dollar is the first date in the series struck only at Philadelphia and only in proof format. Some 1,541 pieces were struck and distributed through proof sets, but that rather substantial proof coinage fails to make this issue plentiful in high grade. Superb Gems are seldom offered, although advanced collectors with ample means and patience will be able to acquire an attractive coin. High-grade 1879 proofs are known for their eye appeal. This is illustrated in the NGC Census, where five of the six reported Cameos in PR68 are Star designated. That service lists additional pieces in non-Cameo PR68 (3) and Ultra Cameo PR68 (1). PCGS reports four PR68 Cameos with none equivalent in PR68 or PR68 Deep Cameo (7/25).

This eye-appealing piece yields glimmering fields and sharp, softly frosted design elements. Lovely old-time proof set toning paints the margins in various shades of color, with no distracting marks or hairlines. Census: 6 in 68 Cameo (5 in 68 ), 0 finer (7/25).(Registry values: N7079)
