Description

Divine Albertus Rouble Novodel

Paul I Novodel Albertus Rouble 1796-БM CM-OM MS65 NGC, KM-N283, Bit-H17 (R3), cf. Sev-2385(RR) (there as plain edge). Edge: Cordlike, leftwards. An incredible piece of Russian numismatic history, a Gem Novodel specimen of the already magical Albertus Rouble type. The Albertus Rouble, as a standard circulation piece, was struck in the first year of Paul's 5-year reign and meant to conform to the Albertus Taler standard, which was the standard Taler weight for use in trade in much of the Baltic Region. The remaining circulation issues themselves are famed and desirable prizes for Russian collectors, but Novodels of the type are yet a significant step-up in rarity and collector esteem. The last meaningful Novodel of this specific type to appear at auction was this very coin, auctioned by Ira & Larry Goldberg back in 2003. The fact that another well-preserved specimen has not appeared at public auction in the over 20 years since is the ultimate testament to how special and elusive this coin is. Characteristic envelope-style patination has resulted in gun-metal gray toning throughout, but the multicolor pastel iridescence underneath and the divine layer of glossiness above all combine for an enjoyable viewing experience worthy of a coin this special. A momentous occasion for Rouble collectors of the highest regard.
