Description
1909-O Half Eagle, AU55+
Final New Orleans Key
1909-O $5 AU55+ NGC. The New Orleans Mint shuttered its
doors for good in 1909. It had been closed temporarily between 1861
and 1879, but reopened that year and continued operating for
another three decades. However, by the end of the 1900s decade, the
Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints were producing coins
at a rate that made the Southern facility obsolete. The 1909-O is the widely recognized key to the Indian Head half eagle series thanks to its paltry mintage of 34,200 coins. This well-detailed Choice AU representative is clearly high-end for the grade. Partly lustrous, yellow-gold surfaces display a couple of small marks on the cheek, those being the only impairments of note. The mintmark is evident, if a touch soft from wear.(Registry values: N2998)
