Description

1925-S California Diamond Jubilee Half Dollar
The 16th Piece Struck, With Signed Letter
Satiny MS65

1925-S 50C California MS65 NGC. An item of the utmost rarity and numismatic intrigue, this is the 16th 1925-S Diamond Jubilee half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, and it remains with all its original documentation. A type-written letter on Treasury Department letterhead states:

"TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

"This is to certify that the accompanying DIAMOND JUBILEE HALF DOLLAR was the sixteenth piece struck of this coinage at the Mint of the United States at San Francisco, California, on August 12, 1925."

The letter is signed by the San Francisco Mint Superintendent and the Superintendent of the Coining Department. The coin's original 2.5x4.25 inch manilla envelope is also present, stamped "16" on one side, as is the original wax-sealed envelope from the Superintendent, type-written on the front: Sixteenth piece struck / DIAMOND JUBILEE HALF DOLLAR. The outer envelope retains its red wax seal, although the upper portion of the seal is broken off (a couple of the broken pieces remain with the lot). Finally, a small white paper coin envelope accompanies the lot, type-written on the front: Diamond Jubilee / 16th Piece Struck / Half 1925-S.

The coin itself is in exceptional condition, far exceeding expectations for the MS65 grade. Lovely satin luster is delightfully clean and crisp, showcasing an undeniably early die state as expected. Light champagne warmth blushes over each side, while a tiny toning spot on the 1 in the date serves as a pedigree marker. The holder insert reads: "With '16th Piece Struck' Signed Document." We hope the winning bidder cherishes this incredible group of materials for years to come.(Registry values: N991)
