Description
1844-D Quarter Eagle, AU58
Ex: S.S. New York
1844-D $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Winter 5-I. Ex: S.S. New
York. Both silver and Southern mint gold coins were recovered
from the S.S. New York shipwreck. The ill-fated sidewheel
steamer sailed into a Gulf of Mexico hurricane in early September
1846. Some 150 years later, a remarkable hoard of Charlotte,
Dahlonega, and New Orleans coins was brought up between the
mid-1990s and 2007. The coins were auctioned in 2008 and 2009. This
exceptional 1844-D quarter eagle was among those discoveries, now
certified AU58 by NGC. Frosty green-gold surfaces are bright and
lustrous, with little loss of eye appeal in spite of the long,
subsurface sojourn.(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25GV, PCGS# 7736, Greysheet# 8348)
Weight: 4.18 grams
