Description

1893-CC Liberty Double Eagle, MS62
Lustrous, Colorful Surfaces

1893-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The B in J.B.L. is over the right side of the 8 in the date, identifying Variety 2-A. A small mintage of 18,402 Liberty double eagles was accomplished at the Carson City Mint in 1893, the final year of coinage operations at the famous Western facility. Many of the coins were used to settle large accounts in foreign trade and the 1893-CC has turned up frequently in European holdings in recent times, making the issue more available than the modest production total would suggest. It is still quite elusive in grades above MS62, however.

The present coin is an impressive MS62 example, with well-detailed design elements that show the slightest trace of softness on the tiara. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster and exhibit the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. PCGS has graded 24 numerically finer examples (5/19).(Registry values: N2998)
