Description

1895 Twenty Dollar, PR55
Collectible 19th Century Proof

1895 $20 PR55 PCGS. CAC. JD-1. Only 51 proof double eagles were struck in 1895, and less than half of those are believed to survive, suggesting that not all of the coins were originally sold to collectors. PCGS estimates a survival of 20 to 24 pieces, although John Dannreuther's estimate in United States Proof Coins, Volume IV is just 16 to 20 examples. In either case, the PCGS certified population of 23 coins is likely inflated by resubmissions.

This is one of four proofs reported by PCGS in AU grades, evidently spending a brief period of time in circulation shortly after its issue. The date position and deeply mirrored fields are correct for the proof dies, and the slight high-point friction on the devices and in the open areas of the fields leaves all details sharp. Both sides have a number of abrasions from coin-to-coin contact, although eye appeal remains pleasing, as the CAC endorsement suggests. Population: 1 in 55, 12 finer. CAC: 1 in 55, 2 finer (5/19).
