Description

Near-Gem 1836 Quarter, B-4
Moderately Prooflike Fields
Early Quarter Dollars Plate Coin

1836 25C MS64 NGC. B-4, R.4. This is the plate coin for the variety in Early Quarter Dollars of The United States Mint, the 2010 reference written by numismatic luminaries Rory R. Rea, Dr. Glenn Peterson, Bradley S. Karoleff, and John J. Kovach Jr. The coin is tied for the finest known B-4 with one other MS64 NGC example, lot 791 from our April 2008 Rosemont Central States auction. Lengthy radial die cracks on both sides help attribute this well preserved Capped Bust quarter. The mildly prooflike surfaces are brilliant save for peripheral golden-brown. Study beneath a loupe fails to locate any grade-limiting abrasions. Minor retained laminations are noted on the D in UNITED, the C in 25 C, and the field beneath the beak. Combined Census for all 1836 varieties: 17 in 64, 0 finer (6/12).
