Description

1865-S Inverted Date Eagle, AU53
Popular Variant

1865-S $10 865 Over Inverted 186 AU53 PCGS. This is the better known of the two varieties of 1865-S eagles and it is spectacular from a visual perspective as the 186 date logotype was initially punched into the die upside-down and then corrected ("I'll have what he's drinking ..."). This variety wasn't publicized until the 1950s and it was long thought to be rare but is actually more available than the Normal Date 1865-S eagles. Around 45-55 pieces are known with an estimated nine or 10 examples in About Uncirculated.

This variety becomes rare in AU55 and it is unique in Uncirculated with the sole example being a remarkable PCGS MS64 from the shipwreck S.S. Brother Jonathan. It brought $115,000 in May 1999 and $81,650 in August 2001.

The AU53 Jacobson coin offers lightly worn design elements, with a touch of the usual softness on the central reverse. The orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, with some chatter on Liberty's neck and cheek the only marks of note. This piece is unquestionably in the Condition Census for this variety and it is one of five graded by PCGS with four finer (12/19).
