Description

1992-D Cent, MS62 Red and Brown
Rare FS-901, Close AM Variety

1992-D 1C Close AM, FS-901, MS62 Red and Brown PCGS. Officially, the Mint did not adopt the Close AM configuration of AMERICA until 1993 cents were struck, begging the question of why a Close AM was found on a select few 1992 Philadelphia and Denver-minted business strikes. In addition, the designer's initials "FG" are located farther from the lower right side of the Lincoln Memorial building than on normal 1992 cents. Many have speculated the Close AM cents were part of a test run for die changes planned for 1993. Philadelphia coins with the Close AM are extremely rare, while the D-Mint coins of the modified legend are slightly more available -- yet only about 15 examples are known. Listed as #38 in the Scott Schechter and Jeff Garrett reference 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins. A necessity for the major variety Registry Set. Population: 2 in 62 Red and Brown, 2 finer (6/15).
