Description

1796 Liberty Cap Cent, Good 6
S-82, Double Struck, Flipover

1796 1C Liberty Cap, S-82, B-3, R.5 -- Double Struck, Flipover -- Good 6 NGC. The high, level date and the leaf touching the F in OF allow ready attribution of this spectacular mint error. The first strike was moderately off center toward 12 o'clock. The second strike is also noticeably off center, toward 3 o'clock. The obverse from the second strike became the reverse for the first strike. The second strike obverse retains TES OF AMERI from the first strike. LIBERTY is absent. The reverse shows most of the first strike date, along with Liberty's profile and pole. UNITED ST and the fraction are absent. The plum-red and sea-green surfaces are lightly to moderately granular. Our EAC grade Good 6.
Ex: San Francisco ANA (Heritage, 7/2005), lot 5095, Dallas Signature (Heritage, 10/2009), lot 78, which realized $1,840.
