A Die Variety Missed by Guimaraes

Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1699-(R) AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM98, LMB-31a, cf. Guimaraes-1699-4a. Second type. "PORTVG+REX?" variety. Struck with the Rio 1699 die (with an apparently repunched last digit of the date), but lacking any of the cataloged Bahia obverse dies used in this issue, thus a new Rio obverse die missing from Guimaraes' book. This enticing study piece displays soundly-struck motifs, graced by a subdued tangerine tone.
