Scarce This Fine
1902-S $5 MS66 NGC. With a mintage of 939,000 coins, the
1902-S half eagle is plentiful in most grades. Mint State survivors
make up a majority of the certified population. Nonetheless, coins
grading as fine as MS66 are conditionally scarce, and finer pieces
are rare. This Premium Gem displays a sharp strike and frosty
yellow-gold mint luster. Under a loupe, a few tiny ticks are
visible, but they hardly distract. Census: 35 in 66 (3 in 66+, 1 in
