Description

1801 Eagle, AU53
BD-2, Heraldic Eagle Reverse

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The 1801 BD-2 die marriage has a unique feature among Draped Bust eagles. On most examples of this die pairing, there are nine prominent vertical lines within the cap. The generally accepted theory is that a screw, or other metal object, fell into the striking process and impressed the vertical marks into the obverse working die. There is also speculation the vertical spines are clash marks from the shield, but this is not widely accepted or proven. The vertical marks do add interest to the BD-2 die pairing.

This example of the BD-2 variety has medium yellow-gold toning with a good strike. The coin is lightly abraded with marks consistent with the AU53 grade. Bright luster is found in protected areas, especially within the obverse stars and reverse lettering. This coin is a nice example of the BD-2 variety, 1801 date, or type.
