1806 B-3 Quarter Dollar, MS65 ★
The Finest Known Example
Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint Plate Coin
1806 25C MS65 ★ NGC. B-3, R.1. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The
U.S. Mint combined six obverse dies and eight reverse dies to
produce 10 quarter dollar die marriages in 1806, including the
Overdate and nine Normal Date varieties. The entire series of
Draped Bust quarters of 1796, and 1804 to 1807, includes 20 die
marriages. Exactly half of those varieties are dated 1806. The B-3
and B-9 die combinations are the most plentiful of the year.
However, only 11 Mint State examples of B-3 are recorded in the
Condition Census, and just two of those are graded MS65. The Eric
P. Newman specimen is slightly finer with the additional Star
designation for eye appeal, and it is the finest known 1806 B-3
quarter. This exquisite piece is the plate coin for Early
Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint.This Gem represents the latest known die state and exhibits die defects in the lower left part of the shield. The reverse die was used first for early die states of the B-3, second for all examples of B-4, and third for late die states of B-3.
Exceptional toning appears on both sides of this lovely Gem, with brilliant underlying mint frost. Both sides have light silver centers with delicate champagne toning, changing to lovely magenta, russet, cobalt-blue, and turquoise. The eye appeal is outstanding.
