Description
1832 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS62
Just Three Finer at PCGS
1832 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS62 PCGS. A halo of green-gold
coloration envelops a rich, yellow-gold center. The reverse has
semi-prooflike regions between the wings and near the denomination.
Light abrasions are present, but are not distracting. Strike is
fabulous, with no detectible regions of notable weakness, even with
even a glass. While most dates of this short, six-issue series see their Mint State certified populations peak in MS63, decline slightly in MS64, and then contain a few examples in higher grades, the same cannot be said for the 1832. Its PCGS certified population peaks in MS62, and the only finer examples are one in 62+, one in 63, and one in 65, making this middle year a conditional rarity.
The portrait was modified slightly in 1832, a change that was attributed to Chief Engraver William Kneass. Altering hubs seemed to be an obsession of Kneass', as evidenced by the flurry of Master Dies and Master Hubs produced by him in the Capped Bust half dollar series, as well as the two-gule reverse on Bust quarters. In his book Bust Half Fever, Capped Bust half dollar expert Edgar Souders suggests that the reason for Kneass' tinkering was to improve the strike of American coins. His success in this initiative was hit or miss, as he lacked a full understanding of metal flow, according to Souders. Perhaps a similar objective was pursued here in the quarter eagle series.
