1853-O Double Eagle, MS61
Elusive, Low-Mintage New Orleans Twenty
Seldom Offered This Fine

1853-O $20 MS61 NGC. Winter-1. Ex: Eagle Collection. The mintage was only 71,000 pieces for the 1853-O double eagle compared to 190,000 for the 1852-O, and the issue is far more elusive in high grades -- not that any O-mint twenty is particularly easy to find in Mint State. The 1853-O is proportionately less-available than the 1852-O. In his most recent Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint, (Third Edition, 2018), Doug Winter says this about the 1853-O double eagle:

"The PCGS and NGC population figures for AU55 and AU58 1853-O double eagles are well-inflated due to resubmissions. Since the second edition of this book was published in 2002, I have not seen more than a handful of AU55s and AU58s which I felt were properly graded. I have seen only one 1853-O double eagle which was unquestionably Uncirculated in addition to the NGC Specimen 61 described above."

Winter refers to his list of Significant Pieces Known, where the present MS61 coin is listed as the third example on his list. This MS61 NGC example is sharply struck, and there are only a few scattered minor bagmarks, less severe than might be expected for the grade. Cartwheel luster abounds throughout each side, and the pleasing green-gold coloration is accented with faint orange and olive-gray tinges. This is a sharply struck, extremely attractive example that brought a strong price of $64,625 in our 2014 Central States Signature sale. The coin remains in the same NGC holder from that sale. Previously, the most recent MS61 example (a different coin) we offered was in our Denver Signature (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 5586, which brought $34,626.50. Demand is high for high-quality Mint State 1853-O examples and a bold bid is indicated to take this well-pedigreed '53-O home. NGC Census: 5 in 61, 3 finer (1/25).
