Description
1853 Seated Dollar, Rare PR58
Important Restrike Proof
1853 $1 Restrike PR58 PCGS. CAC. No original proofs are
confirmed for the 1853 date, although those who desire a proof can,
on rare occasions such as this, compete for a restrike (novodel)
proof. We expect it will be a spirited competition. By all
accounts, only a dozen of such proofs exist -- perhaps struck in
1862 or 1863, although the exact mintage year is as murky as most
of the Mint restrikes of other denominations. Because the 1851 and
1852 proofs are well-known rarities that command much attention
when they appear at auction, the 1853 proofs lack the same
notoriety -- no doubt, because of its larger circulation-strike
mintage. Even so, the inescapable fact remains that the 1853 proofs
are easily rarer than either of the more-famous dates in proof
format and, in fact, the 1853 restrikes are tied for third-rarest
of the Seated series with the 1843 and 1849 proofs. The 1841 and
1842 dates rank respectively as numbers 1 and 2 in proof
rarity. The present example had a brief stint in circulation, and the evidence of handling is most apparent in the right obverse field where it lacks the reflective surface quality and shows a few light marks. In all other aspects, the coin is a gleaming and attractive proof by eye as well as by technical qualifications. Lilac and golden-orange toning glitters on both sides and square, wide rims frame the mirrored fields. Like all of the proofs for the 1853 issue, softness exists at the eagle's left wing shoulder. Diagonal, raised file marks emerge from the rock support above the date. It shares the "common reverse" first used for 1840 proofs and seen on restrike Seated dollar proofs through 1854.
This PR58 dollar is a prize for the Seated proof specialist and a rare opportunity for series collectors seeking to complete a run of the proof dates. Population: 1 in 58, 5 finer (6/15).(Registry values: N1)
