Elusive Novodel 3 Ducats of Michael I Feodorovich

Mikhail I Feodorovich gold Novodel 3 Ducats ND (1613-1645) MS61 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, Fr-28, Kaim-Unl. 9.22gm. A most curious emission and one that virtually never comes to market, the last of which this cataloger was able to trace being this very example in a 2006 auction. While Novodels struck to a 4 Ducat weight are witnessed with some regularity, this is the first instance of this denomination certified by NGC, although likely struck with 4 Ducat dies. While unknown to Kaim, their reference notes #1411-1414 are of lesser weight than the full 13.57 grams of #1410, making this emission in-line with precedence. A clear outlier in terms of absolute rarity, and wholly attractive, boasting a largely on-flan strike and pleasing honeyed patina. An exciting specimen for the Russian collector and an obvious target for the advanced cabinet.
