Substantial Gold Coronation Medal of Catherine II

Catherine II gold "Coronation" Medal 1762-Dated UNC Details (Edge Repair) NGC, Diakov-117 var. (missing in gold). 64mm. 173.20gm. By Ivanov and Waechter. Struck to a weight of 50 Ducats. An extreme Russian rarity and one of a handful of expansive Russian Medals in gold, with this emission among the most elusive, evading even Diakov, who makes no mention in his exhaustive reference. Incredibly ornate, featuring the crowned portrait of Catherine II and reverse boasting allegorical Russia and Faith standing at an altar, beneath Providence. Despite the noted edge repair and contact marks characteristic of large gold Medals, the piece faces up especially fine, beaming with a consistent honeyed tone and ample flash throughout. Full in both its quality and the impact of its expression, we anticipate an elevated collector response commensurate with the continued interest in expansive Russian Medals.
