Catherine II gold "St. Petersburg Mining School" Medal 1774-Dated (c. Early 19th Century) UNC Details (Edge Repaired) PCGS, Diakov-433.1 (unlisted in gold). 40.60gm. 56mm. This rare selection is an unawarded prize Medal issued by what is now known as the Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University, which is still in existence today. The June 28, 1774 date noted on the Medal corresponds with the first charter of this "Mining School", the original name of the institution, decreed following the order of Her Imperial Majesty. It is the oldest technical University in Russia. The classically inspired mining imagery is fantastically executed, with the tribute paid to Catherine the Great in symbolism adding a regal flair. Though this medal is unlisted in the present gold format in Diakov, our research yielded no modern records of this medal in any format. As such, this is an incredibly rare offering with great importance from its ties to such an esteemed national institution. The competition for such an elusive and groundbreaking offering could be considerable.
