Description

1922 With Star Grant Half, MS66+
Conditionally Rare Key Commemorative

1922 50C Grant With Star MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Overall, the With Star Grant Memorial half dollar is about three times scarcer than its No Star counterpart, but this gap widens even further in the finer levels of Mint State. The With Star issue is scarce in MS66, and anything finer is genuinely rare. In his Commemorative Encyclopedia, Dave Bowers calls this issue the rarest commemorative half dollar in Mint State. Coinage totaled only 5,000 pieces (plus six additional coins for assay purposes), but 750 pieces were unsold and later melted. The net distribution of 4,256 coins, including assay pieces, is lower than that of any preceding classic commemorative half dollar. This Plus-graded Premium Gem is carefully preserved with satiny luster that shows the usual faint die striations in the fields. Pale champagne and lavender-blue hues encompass much of each side, while deep olive and sun-gold overtones appear around the peripheries. The strike is a trifle soft on Grant's hair and the tree trunk to the left of the cottage door. Population: 40 in 66 (7 in 66+), 5 finer (6/15).(Registry values: N4719)
