Description
Charles III copper Specimen Pattern 1/2 Grano 1769-Mo SP55 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM-PnC1, Guttag-Unl., Cal-12. An interesting coin, though one that has largely puzzled scholars. While clearly carrying the Mo mintmark of Mexico City and the motif of a bird atop what appears to be a cactus, the denomination "Grano" has been determined only on the basis of the curious Go mark to the left of the shield. Normally listed as a Pattern in most references, it is possible that this was a type meant for circulation, as most of the few known examples show signs of wear, with some supposing that they may even have been produced for use in the Philippines. In any event, this type is extremely rare and, along with a 1768 1/16 Real (2 Maravedis), among the first Mexico copper issues. Displaying light chocolate brown color over mildly handled, sharp motifs.Privately Purchased from Richard Long in the early 2000's
