Description

"François-Christophe de Levi, Duc de Dampville" silver Medal 1658 AU55 PCGS, Betts-39. 50mm. By Jean Hardy. FR CRHST DE LEVI D DAMPVILLE P FRANC PROREX AMERICAE Armored bust of de Dampville facing right // EXTE ENIM EXIET DVX QVI REGAT POPVLVM MEVM Crowned coat of arms. Struck in commemoration of François-Christophe de Levis' naming as the Viceroy of the French territories in America, registered in Parliament in 1658. A stunning representative celebrating a momentous achievement for the "Duc de Dampville," who would ultimately never visit the lands he was charged with. Amber peripheries abound this dove-gray example, struck with exacting precision and precluded from a finer conditional assignment by minor weakness and friction to Levis' hair. An important example of exonumia from early American and Canadian history, which appears to be the only representative in silver publicly available, with specimens in the British Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, and Bibliothèque Nationale, with none having surfaced since this last auctioned as part of the Ford Collection in 2006.
