Description

1831 B-2 Quarter, MS64
Small Letters, Wide Arrowheads

1831 25C Small Letters, B-2, R.2, MS64 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/4. Seven 1831 varieties produced 398,000 quarters in 1831. Chief Engraver William Kneass experimented with several design changes. The 1831 B-1 through B-4 varieties featured Small Letters while the B-5 through B-7 varieties had Large Letters. Other variables included Wide Arrowheads and Narrow Arrowheads, as well as a Curl Base 2 versus a Flat Base 2 in the denomination. The B-2 variety employs Small Letters, Wide Arrowheads, and a Flat Base 2. This is a pleasingly patinated near-Gem Uncirculated quarter in its late die state, showing extensive die cracks throughout the reverse legends and arrowheads. A sharp strike renders essentially full details on the raised elements surrounded by partially reflective, minimally marked fields. PCGS Population (for the variety): 1 in 64, 3 finer (5/25).
