1887 Grove Ranch Plantation Token
Medcalf TE-17, MS62 Brown
Only Six Pieces Certified

1887 Token Grove Ranch Plantation, 12 1/2 Cents, MS62 Brown PCGS. Medcalf TE-17. The 3,870-acre Grove Ranch Plantation on the island of Maui had blacksmiths produce crude tokens worth one-eighth of a dollar in 1886 and 1887. The tokens circulated among employees of the sugar concern. This latter type is the rarer of the two. Maurice Gould and Ken Bressett rated it R.7 in 1961 (four to 12 pieces known). PCGS has certified five examples in all: one in XF45 and four in MS62 Brown. NGC reports a single submission in AU50. Both sides of this top-graded survivor are well-detailed with mahogany-brown surfaces and occasional steel accents. Slightly rough, presumably as made. Listed on page 425 of the 2022 Guide Book. Population: 4 in 62 Brown, 0 finer (11/21).
