Description

Remarkable 1856 Three Dollar, Choice Uncirculated

1856 $3 MS64 NGC. In The United States $3 Gold Pieces, Bowers (2005) writes that "in Mint State the rarity of the 1856 is not widely appreciated. Truly choice and gem pieces are seldom seen in the marketplace now, nor were they ever plentiful." Garrett and Guth succinctly describe this issue when they say: "Circulated examples are very common, but Mint State examples are very rare." This sharp contrast is supported by the population data from both NGC and PCGS.
Flashy luster radiates from the yellow-gold surfaces of this carefully preserved piece. Scattered grazes are nearly imperceptible to the unaided eye. A few tiny toning spots barely detract from outstanding eye appeal. It is virtually impossible to find an 1856 three dollar nicer than the present specimen. NGC and PCGS combined report just three pieces finer (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
