Description

1865-S Double Eagle, MS64
Frosty and Choice
S.S. Republic Coin

1865-S $20 MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Small S, as usual. The 1865-S double eagles recovered from the S.S. Republic off the coast of Georgia tend have considerably brighter, frostier luster than those pulled from the wreck of the S.S. Brother Jonathan, which were discovered off the coast of Northern California. Those coins are generally more subdued. As with both types, the surfaces of this near-Gem are remarkably unabraded and smooth for a No Motto double eagle. Liberty's curls, the eagle's feathers, and the stars around are generally strong, save for star 3 at the left obverse. Likewise, the date is a bit lightly impressed as usually seen.
