1778-79 Brass Rhode Island Ship Medal, MS61
Betts-563, Flight of the Continental Army

1778-79 MEDAL Rhode Island Ship Medal, Branches Below Ship, Brass, MS61 NGC. Betts-563, Breen-1141, Whitman-1740, R.4. The Battle of Rhode Island followed the siege of Newport by the Continental militia. As the militia abandoned the siege and withdrew to the north, British forces attacked the Americans following the arrival of British warships. While the battle ended inconclusively, it is considered a British strategic victory, with Royal forces remaining on Aquidneck Island, depicted on the reverse of these medals. The Battle of Rhode Island was the first skirmish following the entry of France in support of the American cause. This piece has attractive chocolate-brown surfaces that exhibit traces of yellow along with light-colored inorganic material on both sides. Census (including those certified as copper): 3 in 61; 8 finer (10/19). Listed on page 52 of the 2020 Guide Book.
