Description

1859-O Dollar, MS64
Lustrous and Originally Toned

1859-O $1 MS64 PCGS. OC-1, R.1. Osburn-Cushing Die State d/d. During the early 1960s, the Treasury still possessed many sealed 1,000-coin bags of Uncirculated silver dollars. Most were the Morgan and Peace types, but a very small number of bags, perhaps two or three, contained 1859-O and 1860-O Seated dollars. It is said that the lucky possessors of those bags temporarily became coin dealers until the bags were depleted. While those '59-O dollars were Mint State, Q. David Bowers writes that "almost without exception, the coins from these bags are heavily bagmarked and scarred, the result of careless storage, handling, and shipping procedures over the years." Perhaps the present near-Gem came from a different source, since the lustrous surfaces are minimally abraded. The golden-brown border toning is attractive, and the strike is intricate. Population: 30 in 64 (3 in 64+), 3 finer (11/21).(Registry values: N4719)
