Description

1905 Twenty Dollar, PR62
Low Proof Mintage, Unexpected Contrast

1905 $20 JD-1, High R.4, PR62 NGC. The 1905 double eagle proof mintage is 92 coins. Garrett and Guth write, "Although the mintage for the 1905 issue is slightly smaller than for the 1904 double eagle, it is considerably rarer." John Dannreuther suggests the two years are about equal, each with 50 to 65 proofs known. This example approaches Gem eye appeal, although a loupe reveals some parallel slide marks on Liberty's cheek that limit the numeric grade. A small degree of contrast exists between the sharply struck and lightly frosted devices. This is the early die state, with light polish in and around the eagle's tailfeathers. Most double eagles struck from 1902 to 1907 lack any cameo contrast, many with entirely brilliant fields and devices. This pleasing example displays a welcome amount of cameo effect. NGC Census: 2 in 62, 11 finer (7/25).
