Description

1922 No D Cent, MS63 Brown
Strong Reverse, FS-401

1922 1C No D, Strong Reverse, FS-401, MS63 Brown NGC. Die Pair 2. Although 1922 No D cents are known with Weak and Strong Reverses, it is the latter coins that command significant interest from collectors. These are designated as Die Pair 2 (FS-401 in the Cherrypicker's Guide). Although the Denver Mint was accustomed to using badly worn dies as a cost-saving measure, it appears that officials replaced the worn-out reverse with a new die en route to creating this popular variety, with obverse clashing and the mintmark lapped away. The reverse is razor-sharp on this MS63 example with even chocolate-brown color. Obverse detail is typically mushy. No trace of the D is seen. A couple of ticks appear on the portrait.
