Description

1798 Draped Bust Dollar, AU58
B-24, BB-124, Terminal Obverse Die State

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, 4 Lines, B-24, BB-124, R.2, AU58 PCGS. Bowers Die State V. Although the B-24, BB-124 variety is readily available in most grades, it becomes scarce in this late die state showing a shattered die at and around star 12. Multiple die cracks emerge in many directions throughout the lower-right obverse. A bold crack from the stem to the edge confirms the late reverse die stage. The BB-124 was the sole use for this obverse, while the reverse die had a subsequent use on 1799 BB-152. It is conceivable that some of the late die state BB-124 coins were struck in 1799. As often seen on BB-124, many right-side field stars and the eagle's head are weakly struck. This pleasing silver-gray example retains much of its original mint luster and the obverse sharpness helps to confirm the near-Mint State grade. There are no visible adjustment marks and the eye appeal is strong for this late die state example.
