Description

1901-S Half Dollar, MS65
All-Brilliant, None Finer at NGC

1901-S 50C MS65 NGC. An natural inclination would be to compare this Barber half dollar issue to its famous quarter dollar cousin, but the comparison is unfair. That issue claims a mintage one-tenth the size and is uncollectible at this grade level. The 1901-S half dollar was struck to the extent of nearly 850,000 coins. The certified population is fairly evenly spread out, although most coins grade between Poor and Very Fine. It is also likely that the high-end of the spectrum is inflated by resubmissions. Suffice it to say the 1901-S half is rare at this grade level. The obverse is fully defined. Softness is confined to the shield-wing juncture and the fletchings on the reverse. All-brilliant with glistening mint luster. Census: 4 in 65 (1 in 65+), 0 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N4719)
