Description

1840 WB-102 Small Letters Half, MS64
Repunched Date, Outstanding Eye Appeal

1840 50C Small Letters Reverse of 1839, Repunched Date, FS-301, WB-102, MS64 PCGS. Repunching is clearly visible on the 40 of the date, with the secondary digits south and southeast of the primary numerals. This popular Cherrypickers' variety is scarce in near-Gem condition (as is any variety of the 1840 halves). The multiple date repunching is strong on this early die state coin, which lacks the die crack through the legend on the Small Letters reverse that signifies a later state of the dies. Shades of pale-blue and champagne-gold cover both sides of this satiny and lustrous Choice example. Aside from weakness on the left-side stars, the strike is sharp and abrasions are minor. Population (all Small Letters varieties): 16 in 64, 12 finer (6/16).

Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 392647, Base PCGS# 6234)

Weight: 13.36 grams
