Description

1857 Seated Half Dollar, PR63
Only 30 to 40 Proofs Known

1857 50C PR63 PCGS. Proofs were struck on-demand in 1857, and the number of specimens coined went unrecorded. Breen wrote of this Seated half dollar issue in his 1989 Proof Encyclopedia: "Except for the small cent, probably the most difficult denomination of the year." He estimated that 20 to 25 proofs were known, while PCGS now proposes that 30 to 40 proofs survive. This Select proof features a layer of teal-gray toning with elements of rose and violet. Each side is remarkably smooth for the grade with few signs of contact. A collectible example from an exceedingly elusive proof emission. Population: 16 in 63, 18 finer (5/16).
