Description

Rare XF Open 3, No Arrows 1873 Half

1873 50C Open 3, No Arrows XF40 NGC. The Guide Book lists the mintage of this rare issue as 214,200 pieces. What it omits is how many were melted by the Mint after the "Crime" of 1873 changed the statutory weight. Another possibility is that much of the production actually belongs to its 1873 Closed 3 predecessor. In any event, the 1873 Open 3, No Arrows half is a formidable rarity. NGC has certified just 13 examples in all grades. The present lightly circulated representative displays dusky olive-gray toning and is only minimally abraded for the designated grade.(Registry values: N2998)
