Description

1880 Half Dollar, Contrasted Proof
High-End Cameo Gem

1880 50C PR65+ Cameo PCGS. CAC. A prominent die lump in the left (facing) wing suggests this deep-mirrored Gem proof was struck from dies also used for business strikes, with the reverse die featuring a closed bud. This is a sharply struck, contrasted proof with sharp eye appeal. The proof striking is fully detailed except for below the eagle's left leg, which shows a flat spot at the claw. Scarce this nice, where it is the sole Plus-graded Cameo proof at the Gem level. Population: 28 in 65 (2 in 65+) Cameo, 12 finer. CAC: 9 in 65, 10 finer (5/16).
