Description

1793 AMERI. Chain Cent, Good 4
S-1, Historic
Guide Book Variety

1793 1C Chain, AMERI., S-1, B-1, R.4, Good 4 PCGS. The Sheldon-1 cent was the first variety struck for commerce at the fledgling Philadelphia Mint. It is a Guide Book variety, since only S-1 abbreviates the country name. S-1 is also scarcer than S-3 or S-4, the usually seen Chain cent marriages. The present piece is sharp for the Good 4 level, with fully readable legends. The deeply toned surfaces are evenly microgranular. A narrow linear flan flaw extends from the B in LIBERTY down to the border at 7:30.
