Description

1911-S Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS66
Virtually Unavailable Any Finer

1911-S $20 MS66 NGC. The 1911-S double eagle is a sought-after branch mint issue in the Saint-Gaudens series -- one that served its primary purpose in international trade. From a 757,750-piece mintage, approximately 450,000 coins were sent to Europe and another 250,000 coins went to South America. Not surprisingly, few examples survive in Premium Gem Mint State. This MS66 example is remarkable not only for its high-level preservation, it is exceeded in grade only by a single MS67 example and a handful of MS66+ coins at PCGS and NGC combined. Rich satiny luster radiates across each side, with only minimal contact marks seen under magnification. Both the obverse and the reverse motifs display sharp definition, particularly from Liberty's facial features to the well-defined toes. The surfaces display attractive straw-gold color with soft, subtle greenish undertones that enhance the coin's considerable eye appeal. Seldom encountered at this level of preservation, this Premium Gem represents one of the few surviving specimens in such pristine condition. Census: 56 in 66 (2 in 66+), 0 finer (9/25).(Registry values: N4719)
