Description

Lord Baltimore Fourpence, Choice VF
Hodder 1-A, Colorful and Luminous

(1659) 4PENCE Lord Baltimore Fourpence VF35 PCGS. CAC. Hodder 1-A, W-1010, R.6. The smallest silver denomination struck for the colony of Maryland was the fourpence, or groat. The groats, like their larger fellows, bore the portrait of Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore and first Lord Proprietor of Maryland. While many surviving Lord Baltimore silver coins are holed or otherwise impaired, this is a beautiful Choice VF coin with honest wear on faintly luminous surfaces, pale blue-gray on the interiors and high points with deeper indigo at the margins and protected areas. Population: 1 in 35, 3 finer (1/14).
Ex: Loye L. Lauder (Doyle, 12/1983), lot 126.

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2U3J, PCGS# 32, Greysheet# 378)
