1870 Three Cent Silver, Judd-799, Pollock-886
Struck in Copper, PR63 Red and Brown

1870 3CS Three Cent Silver, Judd-799, Pollock-886, Low R.7, Copper, Reeded Edge, PR63 Red and Brown NGC. William Barber is credited with the obverse design, which features a seated figure of Liberty facing left. The right hand holds a shield, and the left hand grasps an olive branch. A free-standing liberty pole and cap rises vertically behind the shield. The reverse die is the regular issue three cent silver design. Sets were sold in silver, copper, and aluminum with either reeded or plain edges. This Red and Brown example is primarily orange-red with blue overtones, and a few areas of cloudy, deep gray-blue toning at 8 o'clock on the obverse and at 10 o'clock on the reverse. A scattering of tiny carbon spots occupy the lower-left margin of the reverse. Less than a dozen pieces are known of the copper, reeded edge design. Census (both edge varieties in copper): 1 in 63 Red and Brown, 5 finer (8/15).
