Description

British Colony bronzed-copper Proof Cent 1791 PR66 Brown NGC, FT9A, KM1. Ex. Samuel Birchall Collection. From the collector: "Sent from Soho on 1 sup st /sup July 1793 to the token issuer and collector Samuel Birchall.  Samuel Birchall is a name very familiar to numismatists since in 1796 he wrote one of the earliest books known on British eighteenth century tokens entitled 'A Descriptive list of the Provincial Copper Coins or Tokens issued between the years 1786 and 1796 arranged Alphabetically.' The Soho coins as sent to Birchall remained in their original paper wrappers untouched for two centuries before being opened by the present consignor. The coins are sold with their original wrappers."

A stunning bronzed proof, with an almost unbelievable amount of blue and purple color for a bronze coin; indeed, the color modifier of "Brown" assigned to it by NGC does not nearly do it justice. The flash in the fields produce a kind of highlighting effect for the devices that is quite different than the cameo effect that you see on proof silver coins. With a pedigree going back an impressive 222 years!
