1812 Bust Half O-107', MS66
Early Die State, CAC
Ex: Eliasberg, Finest of the Variety

1812 50C Large 8, O-107, R.1, MS66 PCGS. CAC. This Premium Gem Capped Bust half dollar is from the famed Eliasberg Collection, still housed in its old green label PCGS holder. The O-107 variety is known for a diagnostic "mound" or die lump adjacent to the left (facing) wingtop. This example is struck from the early die stage and lacks the lump, signifying an early die state (O-107') -- thought to be seen less often than the later die state. A better O-107 diagnostic is the first 1 in the date (the Jumping 1), which was entered far too high in the die and distant from the other digits. A tiny tine off the upper right shield corner confirms the O-107 reverse.

An earlier date with wonderful eye appeal, the surfaces exude originality and cartwheel luster. Frosted, lilac-gray toning is attractively pearlescent, with tan-gold toning accents that cling to some of the devices. The coin is sharply struck at the centers, while the peripheral elements are not quite as sharp. According to Herrman's AMBPR, this is the finest-known example of the die marriage and one of the finest 1812 halves extant. Population (all 1812 varieties combined): 10 in 66 (2 in 66+), 1 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 1 finer (7/19).(Registry values: N4719)
