Description

1794 O-101 Flowing Hair Half, VF30
Pleasing Collector-Grade Example

1794 50C O-101, T-7, High R.3, VF30 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/1. The date is widely spaced with the 1 higher than the other digits. Star 1 penetrates the lower curl and star 2 points to the tip of the second curl. The O-101 is the most available of 11 die marriages required to strike a reported mintage of 23,464 pieces. Researchers still debate the exact mintage of 1794 half dollars and their delivery dates, although most of the coins were certainly struck and delivered in 1795. Whatever the mintage, the 1794-dated coins are in strong demand by collectors regardless of variety in all conditions.

A glass reveals some light adjustment marks on the obverse and the expected minor abrasions from circulation, although these factors are not readily apparent in-hand. The rims, dentils, hair strands, and date are well-defined for the VF level. Attractive slate-gray toning displays blue and rose-gold accents. The reverse is glossy and sharp with olive-gray color with few marks and smooth, light wear. Population (all varieties): 27 in 30, 46 finer (12/16).
