1861-S Quarter Eagle, AU58
Substantial Luminous Luster
1861-S $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. At Philadelphia, a remarkable
1,283,878 quarter eagles were coined during the first year of the
Civil War. It was a different story at San Francisco, where double
eagles were the bedrock of West Coast banking. The 1861-S two and a
half mintage was only 24,000 pieces, and most survivors are in VF
to AU grades. This near-Mint example has the "dirty gold"
appearance prized by specialists. The partly lustrous surfaces are
minimally marked. Census: 23 in 58, 7 finer (5/25).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25JY, PCGS# 7795, Greysheet# 8390)
