Description

1878 8TF Morgan Dollar, MS66+
Deep-Mirrored Obverse, Frosty Reverse
Stellar Example of the Earliest Morgan

1878 8TF $1 Diagonal In 8, VAM-17, MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: JCS Collection. VAM specialists will recognize the tiny diagonal die line in the lower loop of the first 8 on this eight tailfeathers variety. VAM-17's more prominent die markers are minor obverse die doubling on LIBERTY and bold reverse doubling on the wreath and border legends. As an eight tailfeathers type coin, this high-end Premium Gem is something special. PCGS has seen only three numerically finer coins (7/19), and Prooflike or Deep Mirror Prooflike pieces are nearly unknown this fine. Luster abounds on both sides without a shred of toning. This piece has a true two-faced appearance: the obverse alone has grounds for a Deep Mirror Prooflike designation and provides pleasant cameo contrast, while the reverse is universally frosty with no reflectivity. The eye appeal and surface preservation are exceptional. Not only is Liberty's cheek pristine, but the mirrored obverse fields are beautifully devoid of the usual scattered marks seen on many prooflike Morgans. CAC: 28 in 66, 2 finer (7/19).
