1866 Shield Nickel, PR67 Cameo
Popular Rays Type
1866 5C Rays PR67 Cameo NGC. Amazingly well preserved with
razor sharp definition and solid reflective qualities under an even
layer of delicate rose-gray patina. Unlike the vast majority of
these early nickel proofs, this Superb specimen boasts an almost
perfect planchet and the field/device contrast is immediately
noticeable. The proof mintage of this first year Shield nickel has
been underestimated for over a century, the figure often listed of
200+ pieces is more likely double the actual number. Certainly, at
this outstanding grade level the supply is extremely limited.
